FOLKESTONE & HYTHE DISTRICT COUNCIL LETTER REGARDING DEMOLITION
Folkestone and Hythe District Council has issued a letter to residents regarding a ‘notice of intention to demolish a building’ in relation to Leas Pavilion. We would like to reassure the community that Leas Pavilion is not being demolished in its entirety. The existing building is being dismantled as part of its sympathetic restoration.
The term ‘demolition’ as used by Folkestone & Hythe District Council is a general term and does not accurately represent the work being undertaken at Leas Pavilion. Wherever part of a structure has to be taken down, the contractor has to apply to the local council for a demolition notice.
In the case of Leas Pavilion, the work is not demolition but dismantling. All of the terracotta façade, stained glass, wooden balustrades, and iron gates have already been dismantled and sent to specialists for restoration as they are the original elements to be retained. Similar work is completed inside the building. Where original features cannot be removed, moulds and samples have been taken of ceilings, walls, and arches around column crowns to recreate original interior designs off-site. Some elements that are beyond repair and offer no historical value, such as the flat roof, will be replaced.
Leas Pavilion is being restored in accordance to the heritage planning conditions and once restoration work has been completed, it will be rebuilt to match the original interior and exterior aesthetic.
